FTI’s AWIPS Experience
Fairfield Technologies Inc. has detailed knowledge of and experience with a variety of NOAA and National Weather Service systems, applications, and data.
For the past two years, FTI’s expert staff has performed advanced scientific grid computing R&D for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), evaluating this technology for use in sharing NOAA data and computational resources to solve large, computationally-intensive forecasting problems. Using our expertise in open source, open architecture, standards-based rapid software development, we are continuing to support NOAA in designing and building easier-to-use applications to help NOAA meet its complex and challenging mission.
Previously, Fairfield Technologies Inc. supported Litton/PRC (now NGIT) during initial AWIPS design and development, with special focus on the following tasks:
- Database design and development methodology review, evaluation, and improvement
- Joint Application Development (JAD) facilitation, data architecture and data requirements specification
- Data model design, development, documentation, and quality reviews
- Meteorology, Hydrology, and Geographic Information System data and application modeling, database design, implementation, and migration
- Task management, estimation, planning and budgeting
- “Best practices” and standards development, briefings and training
FTI has held additional contracts with NOAA in AWIPS data modeling, and also has commercial weather systems design and development experience.

FTI’s AWIPS Career Opportunities
On this project, Fairfield Technologies will provide 24/7/365 support for weather forecasters in the field. We are particularly looking for solid professionals with AWIPS experience in the following areas:
- Software O&M
- Software Development, Integration, and Test
- Network Monitoring and Control
- Weather, Water, and Climate Applications
- Enterprise Architecture
- GIS and Web Applications
- Data Management and Visualization
As with all of FTI’s projects, the AWIPS effort will require solid experience and "results-getting" in the following areas:
- Strategic thinking (both inside and outside "the box") and focus
- Technology vision, innovation, and implementation
- Creative design and execution
- Project, product, and people management and leadership
